The quest for an undisputed BCS national championship has become muddle again for the second time in three years. Don't think for one moment it bothers Florida or Oklahoma, who will be playing in the BCS national championship game on January 8th. Despite what others may say, this game between the top two ranked schools in the nation will determine who can be called national champs. This game will feature a pair of Heisman quarterbacks and their high scoring offensives units. In what promises to be a championship game to remember through the years, which team will come out on top and earn the right to call themselves college football's national champions. The Florida Gators earned their way into the national championship game by going on an absolute tear since they suffered a home loss to Mississippi 31-30 during the fourth week of the season. The team's main catalyst for success in 2008 has been their quarterback Tim Tebow. The 2007 Heisman winner, Tebow ended the regular season with a 64.9 completion rate with 2,515 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Tebow improvement the passing game has been overshadowed by where he does most of his damage on opposing defenses, running the ball. In 2008, Tebow was the third leading rusher on the Gators team with 564 yards and 12 touchdowns. Tebow performance and his leadership on the field have helped this offense to average 45.2 points per game. Without a doubt, Tebow is the unquestioned leader of this team as they feed off of his hard nosed play style. The Gators are welcoming back wide receiver, Percy Harvin, who sat out the SEC Championship game. Florida will need Harvin at 100% if they are going to trade scores with the Sooners in this championship game. The real reason for the success of the Gators has the maturity of their defense and how they have performed in 2008. The Gators are only giving up 12.8 points per game and will be tested by a Sooners offense that has scored more than 50 points 9 times this season. The key to the defenses success in 2008 was the 33 turnovers they created. Of those 33 turnovers, the defense intercepted the opposing quarterback 24 times and was able to convert 5 of them into touchdowns. This unit is going to be tested by Oklahoma's 2008 Heisman winner, Sam Bradford, and their explosive offense. If the Gators are going to secure another national championship, it will be because they win the turnover battle and keep the running backs of the Sooners contain by their front seven. The Oklahoma Sooners were not going to be outdone after they suffered their only loss of the season to Texas, 45 - 35 on October 11th. Since then, the Sooners have won 7 straight games by an average of 30.5 points as they marched into the national championship game. During their modest win streak, Oklahoma was able to score more than 60 points on 5 separate occasions. The leader of the Sooners' explosive offense is the 2008 Heisman winner, Sam Bradford. He compiled 4,464 yards with 48 touchdowns, while throwing only 6 interceptions. Bradford's main receiver is Juaquin Iglesias, who led the Sooners with 69 receptions for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns. Despite their passing proficiency, do not make the mistake and think they are a one trick pony because this team can run the ball. The Sooners had two 1,000 yards rushers in 2008. Running backs, Chris Brown and Demarco Murray, eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark while averaging over 5.6 yards per carry and combining for 34 rushing touchdowns. This explosive offense became the first school to score more than 700 points during the college football season. No one is sure what to expect from the Sooners defense that has faced high powered offenses throughout the season. The defense was only able to hold their opponents to 21 points or less six times during the season. Though the points may have been scored when the game was out of reach, you still need to take it into consideration. The star of the unit is linebacker, Travis Lewis, who leads the team with 136 tackles, 4 interceptions and 3 sacks. Though the Sooners faced the high scoring offenses of the Big 12, they have not faced a quarterback, who runs as hard as Tim Tebow. The key to their success is simple, If the Sooners can force Tebow into making uncharacteristic errors like in the Mississippi game, then they will have a chance to win the national championship. One of those players who could make that happen is nose tackle, Gerald McCoy. If he is able to maintain a strong presence in the middle and be able to apply some pressure from the inside, it will limit the Gators effectiveness. Will the old mantra defense wins championship hold true for the Gators or can the Sooners continue to score at will, no matter who they face? The two things we can expect from this game is a lot of points being put up on the board and a continuing debate as to who is the true national champion. In the end, the Gators will come out on top thanks to their defense and their ability to force Bradford into making bad decisions. Florida 38, Oklahoma 35 Statistics courtesy of CBSSports.com |
